Cambridge University: Pain in the machine

Cambridge University put together this short documentary on whether robots should feel pain.

It’s a feeling that most would describe as being unpleasant, both physically and emotionally. But there must be some evolutionary advantage with feeling pain, why do humans and some animals otherwise feel pain if there is no use for it.

The fact that physical pain are associated with damage is certainly the result of natural selection. But with robots having an ever increasing role in society, do we need to consider integrating the concept of pain in the design of robots? Both physical, and emotional?
