Is Anyone out There: The Hundred-Million Dollar “Breakthrough: Listen” Project

The Breakthrough Initiatives are a program of scientific and technological exploration, probing the big questions of life in the Universe: Are we alone? Are there habitable worlds in our galactic neighborhood? Can we make the great leap to the stars? And can we think and act together – as one world in the cosmos?

This Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture features Dan Werthimer of the University of California, who talk about the possibility of other intelligent life in the universe and how we might detect signals from an alien civilization.

Dr. Werthimer describes current and future projects searching for such signals, including the new $100-million Breakthrough Prize Foundation Listen project. He shows how new technologies are revolutionizing the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence (SETI).

He also discusses the SETI@home project, which analyzes data from the world’s largest radio telescope using desktop computers and cell phones from millions of volunteers.
